Job Description

Job Overview:

The Principal Welding Engineer is responsible for interpreting internal or external business issues and recommending best practices. They will be tasked with solving complex Welding-related problems and will work independently with minimal guidance. The Principal Welding Engineer may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in Welding. As such, they must have in-depth expertise in Welding as well as broad knowledge of the Welding discipline within the Engineering function.

Responsibilities

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Guide the Welding Engineering discipline and Metallurgical consultative welding services to the operations group and PMT for onshore & offshore projects

Responsible for various deliverables from the Welding Engineering group, listed (but not limited to) below:

Project Welding Qualification Execution Plan that defines the full scope of Weld Procedures required, schedule of qualification, and quantity of welding consumables and materials required for qualification

Ensure that proper priorities relevant to project schedules are established and review progress

Review and approval of all Project Weld Procedures through direct and indirect communications with the customer and Certifying Authority

Appropriate selection of electrodes based on their physical, chemical, and corrosion properties as well as considering their weldability and economics

Review project schedules, material control reports, and welding consumable estimates to determine changes to the welding execution plan

Manage welding school facility for the training and development of the workforce to improve the welding methodology and good workmanship practices

Assist in the support and development of automatic welding systems

Review and estimates for bids

Complete Welding consumable project-specific requirements estimation, requisitioning, and monitoring Forecast of DOE consumables

Complete Readiness review for important offshore campaigns

Work with Fabrication Management, Yard Welding Dept, Marine Group, and AWS group on future R&D developments and the latest technology available related to welding of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous materials

Maintain contact with internal and external technical groups such as Global Welding Group, TWI, DNV, EWI, Welding Equipment and Consumable manufacturers, and similar organizations for updates on the latest technology

Assist in resolving Metallurgical, Welding, and Quality-related problems, by investigating causes of failures and prescribing fit-for-purpose

Initiate 'Fit for Purpose' evaluations of nonconforming work

Evaluate the performance of Welding Engineers reporting directly to them and make decisions regarding their training needs, changes in classification, and compensation

Visit the vendor’s facility for technical evaluation

Ensure input for bidding is given through the Welding Engineering Group

Monitor projects during the execution stage

Liaise with Operations Manager (Fabrication / Marine), Discipline Managers, PMT, Customers, Operations /Field Engineers, QC/NDT Engineers, Engineering Group, Certifying Authority, Consulting firms like TWI, DNV, etc., Global Welding Technology Group, Bidding group, and Project Management

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Education:

MS/M Tech/ME in Welding

BS /BE/B Tech in Welding/Metallurgy/Mechanical Engineering

8+ years directly related to Welding, Metallurgy and Materials, subsea pipelines

C Eng./SenMemWeldI/Member of professional body preferred

Welding Inspection Qualification preferred
